Answers

Ans 1. Pedology is the study of soil. Petrology is the study of rocks.

Ans 2. (This was a tricky one!) The correct answer is Mercalli Scale. Many of you would have answered Richter Scale. Actually Richter Scale gives the magnitude of the earthquake while Mercalli Scale gives the intensity of the earthquake.

What is the difference between Magnitude and Intensity of earthquake?

You can consider Magnitude equivalent to the power of radio or television waves sent out from a broadcasting station. Intensity is how well you receive the signal, which can depend on your distance from the energy source, the local conditions, and the pathway the signal has to take to reach you.

Therefore, the magnitude of the earthquake may be very high but that does not give a clear indication of the damage done at a particular location because if the place is far off then, the waves would not be strong enough. Hence, we needed one more measure to guage the impact which is called Intensity.

Ans 3. Ring of Fire(or Pacific Rim) – The Ring of Fire is a string of volcanoes and sites of seismic activity, or earthquakes, around the edges of the Pacific Ocean.

It has 452 volcanoes and is home to over 75% of the world’s active and dormant volcanoes.

About 90% of the world’s earthquakes and 81% of the world’s largest earthquakes occur along the Ring of Fire.

(You can watch this to  understand further.)

Ans 4. Eratosthenes (He was also the first person to calculate the circumference of the Earth and also to calculate the tilt of the earth.)

Ans 5. 63 moons (Mercury and Venus have no moon. Moons of other 6 planets add up to 63)

Ans 6. About 250 million years ago, a supercontinent known as Pangaea existed. This supercontinent was made up of all the continents on Earth. Over time, these continents have broken apart, and slowly drifted away from one another. This drift continues today, so that the form the Earth takes today is not by any means the final shape of our Earth.

Ans 7.  1 AU

Tricky question again, easy if you know the definition of Astronomical Unit. An astronomical unit is a unit of length, roughly the distance from the Earth to the Sun.

Ans 8. 180 degree Longitude

Ans 9. Mariana Trench, Pacific Ocean

Ans 10. Tethys Sea
