General Quiz – 91 (Aviation Special)

Q 1. Air traffic control (ATC) is a service provided by ground-based controllers who direct aircraft on the ground and through controlled airspace. The primary purpose of ATC worldwide is to prevent collisions, organize and expedite the flow of traffic, and provide information and other support for pilots. In some countries, ATC plays a security or defensive role, or is operated by the military.

ATC crew works from the ATC tower located at every airport. The windows of an ATC tower as you may observe from the images below, are not similar to those in other buildings. How are the windows different and why that difference?

Q 2. The person seen standing in the image below is Heinrich Kubis, inside Zeppelin LZ-10 “Schwaben”. The picture dates back to the year 1912.

He is popular for a world record in his name. What unique distinction?

Q 3. What is happening here?

It consists on placing crash tenders with powerful water cannons, on each side of a taxiway, pumping water to create a high arch. It can also be performed by three vehicles forming a triangle, with their water cannons’ stream meeting at the centre.

Q 4. Alaska Airlines was the first to offer this online facility. The system was first offered on a limited basis starting in September 1999, and was available to the general public on selected flights. Since then, a growing number of airlines have introduced the system.

This service is generally promoted by the airlines to passengers as being easier and faster because it reduces the time a passenger would normally spend at an airport.

What are we talking about?

Q 5. Robert Crandall, who was head of American Airlines in 1987, found a simple and effective way to reduce the expenses of the American airline company.

He applied a simple idea which allowed the company to save 40 thousand dollars that year.

What did he do?

Q 6. Which is the world’s oldest airline still operating with the original name till now? It has completed 95 years of it’s foundation.

Q 7. The Sukhoi Su-30MKI is a supermaneuverable, all-weather, long-range fighter. The aircraft has a fly by wire (FBW) with quadruple redundancy.

The aircraft has small fins in the front called canard which increases the aircraft lifting ability and deflects automatically to allow high angle-of-attack (AoA) allowing it to perform  Cobra attack. This high agility allows rapid deployment of weapons in any direction as desired by the crew. The canard notably assists in controlling the aircraft at large angles-of-attack and bringing it to a level flight condition.

The integral aerodynamic configuration combined with thrust vectoring results in extremely capable manoeuvrability, taking off and landing characteristics.

Which Indian company manufactures Su-30 MKI under license from Russia’s Sukhoi corporation?

Q 8. Name the phenomenon described here:

When an aircraft passes through the air it creates a series of pressure waves in front of it and behind it, similar to the bow and stern waves created by a boat. These waves travel at the speed of sound, and as the speed of the object increases, the waves are forced together, or compressed, because they cannot get out of the way of each other. Eventually they merge into a single shock wave, which travels at the speed of sound, a critical speed known as Mach 1, and is approximately 1,225 km/h at sea level.

Q 9. Identify the popular aircraft at the centre.

Q 10. Fly-by-wire is a system that replaces the conventional manual flight controls of an aircraft with an electronic interface. The movements of flight controls are converted to electronic signals transmitted by wires (hence the fly-by-wire term), and flight control computers determine how to move the actuators at each control surface to provide the ordered response.

The fly-by-wire system also allows automatic signals sent by the aircraft’s computers to perform functions without the pilot’s input, as in systems that automatically help stabilize the aircraft.

Which was the first civilian aircraft to have digital Fly-by-Wire system?
